Weiz & its surroundings

We are located right next to the pilgrimage church (Wallfahrtskirche) on the Weizberg. Josef Hueber of Graz built the late baroque church in 1757/58. The church was consecrated by prince-archbishop of Seckau in 1776. Extensive renovation works took place inside and outside the church from 2000 to 2005. The rectory and cemetery are located right next to the church.

The Tabor church (Taborkirche), which is located at the main square, is the oldest preserved structure, the town’s landmark, and blazonry. The essentially Romanesque church was dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket of Canterbury.

One of the most beautiful Styrian Renaissance-style structures complete with an arcade court, turrets, clock tower, and ridge turret, is located at the bottom of the Weizberg. Castle Thannhausen (Schloss Thannhausen) was built by Baron of Teufenbach in 1585 and served as the place of residence for the Barons of Thannhausen.

From 1806 until 1850 it hosted the administration center of the district Weiz and is now in possession of the aristocratic house Gudenus.

You can reach the Styrian natural preserve Almenland, the biggest contiguous Alpine pasture of the Alps through the Weizklamm, which stretches out over a distance of 3km (1.9 miles) and features cliffs that are 200m (656 feet) high.
